The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released new salary limits for the coming fiscal year, as well as updated guidance on how to incorporate them into your grant/contract awards. This information is available on the NIH Office of Extramural Research website.
Salary caps limit the amount of direct salary that can be charged to a grant. This amount is defined as the employee’s rate of pay, multiplied by the employee’s level of effort. For example, a faculty member’s salary can’t exceed the cap.
Salary limits also apply to incoming subawards to WashU. A faculty member’s salary can’t be higher than the cap, and must be approved in the award notice.
The salary cap is calculated as $203,700 * X.XX FTE. Executive Level I and II executives are allowed to use a higher rate of salary, while a non-executive, non-modular award may rebudget funds up to the current salary cap to accommodate the increased salary.
